We know workplace first aid training is important, but it really helps if we can make it as convenient as possible.
Not having to trek to a different venue to complete your first aid certificate with a lot of other strangers may seem like a very appealing plan.
Here are some of the types of courses that you can complete at your own workplace, including HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.
Another bonus of completing your first aid certificate in the workplace environment is the option of doing enhanced classes. An enhanced class means that you can complete a large portion of the class online and self-paced. You may choose to do this in your own time or you may be required to do this during work time. The online pre-learning can take anywhere between 1-6 hours depending on what course you are completing.
The other bonus of choosing the enhanced course is that we can do multiple large groups in one day. This is because most of the class is done online, so the remaining part of the course is a short face to face assessment.
For HLTAID009 this is between 30-60 mins, but for the HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting, this can be up to 3 hours.
We have all heard of team building days, so why not a first aid course? A first aid course can be a very fun and immersive experience.
From pretending to be bitten by a snake, to being bandaged up to the neck, there is so much to enjoy about a first aid course.
It can be a little confronting for some, so the other thing that can be really reassuring about attending a corporate first aid course is seeing how your colleagues may respond in an emergency. Natural leaders tend to come to the forefront in a corporate first aid training environment.
Emergency Situations
First aid courses can breed confidence in your workplace, knowing in the event of an emergency, someone there is going to be able to effectively help you.
I was facilitating a first aid class last week, and a lady told me about an event where she choked on a bay leaf in her shepherd’s pie. She was in the kitchen in her offices,
and she choked to the point where she could not breathe. A co-worker who she did not really know came to her aid, he performed the 5 back slaps on her with no response, so proceeded to the chest thrusts, where thankfully she recovered after just one chest thrust. Very frightening but thank goodness for first aid trained staff!
Workplace First Aid Courses
The benefits of knowledge sharing in a group should not be underestimated. Often there are a few people in a group who do not feel confident enough to speak up and ask questions. Some people feel they may sound ‘stupid’. There is no such thing as a stupid question in a first aid class, if this information was obvious, we would all be performing first aid effectively, but unfortunately, we are not.
A recent study showed that only 1 in 3 people are confident enough to perform first aid including CPR.
First Aid Training
With flexible working on the rise, getting together for first aid training can bring people in the workplace together. Although working from home has its benefits, there is also many people using a hybrid model of working in the office or onsite part-time and working in their home part-time.
Just because people are at home, this does not mean that they don’t need to know first aid.
Our philosophy is that there can never be enough people in society who are fluent in first aid.
I have had to help two small children, whom I did not know when they were choking on food. Neither of them was breathing by the time I got to them and it was an extremely frightening situation, both with a good outcome, thankfully.
For employers, having onsite first aid training is a lot more affordable than enrolling employees into individual spaces in a public training course.
At the same time, corporate workplace first aid saves money for the employee when the workplace can pay for their place in training.
