First aid kits for your workplace
This is why it is essential to have an organised and properly stocked workplace first aid kit in case of a medical emergency.
More importantly, this could help to sustain someone safely until help arrives or even better save a life.
For any area of work, first aid is important, but particularly at an office where many people work together.
Accidents happen out of nowhere. I know, as I have been present at quite a few as a bystander (which is ironic considering I also worked in a hospital)
It’s easy for accidents to result in serious injury while engaged in other tasks and you are distracted or concentrating on other things.
We cover everything you need to know in our first aid courses and we come to your site, making it much easier for your team to gain their qualification.
It is essential for all types of places of work to have a first-aid kit of some sort to prepare for these types of occurrences. If you are in an isolated or remote environment, a first aid kit will prove to be a godsend in a life-threatening emergency by delaying further injury or the patient deteriorating before the emergency services arrives.
Safe Work Australia, states that all workers be able to access a first aid kit in their workplace.
The Importance of a Workplace First Aid Kit at your Office
You must have an appropriate first aid kit that meets your workplace requirements. For instance, people who work in an administration/office environment may need a completely different first aid kit to someone who works in an office at a construction site or chemical factory.
You must also consider that you need the correct number of people who are qualified and trained to administer first aid, otherwise your workers are at risk. Depending on how many people are onsite and what kind of company you are running, the first aid kit you will need will vary. There are, however, some simple things that you may need to make sure that you obey the rule.
We have created a checklist of the top 10 most important items that you need in your workplace first aid kit. Checking this regularly keeps you poised to respond in an emergency that may arise.
These kits may include the following medical supplies:
- Disposable gloves
- CPR pocket mask
- Sterile gauze
- Tape
- Triangular bandage
- Roller bandages (small, medium & large)
- Torniquet
- Splint (different sizes)
- Scissors
- Saline/sterile water
Benefits of an appropriate workplace first aid kit for employers and employees
- In an emergency, a fast response is vital
For every minute without CPR, survival from witnessed cardiac arrest decreases by 7–10%. Recovery time can be minimised by a fast reaction, leading to less time missed from accidents. This is equally important with incidents including an allergic reaction and asthma attacks due to the compromised airway.
- Less injuries in the workplace through understanding
When we teach first aid, it increases awareness in your employees about occupational safety, leading to less accidents and injuries. This creates a safer environment for us all. Knowing first aid has a knock on effect to the wider community, you don’t just use your training at work. You carry it in your knowledge bank everywhere you go.
- A more positive climate for the job
Employers may show their workers that they care about ensuring a healthy work atmosphere by making first aid training accessible to employees. First aid courses offered in the workplace can also be used as a team building exercise as it can be quite an immersive experience.
Don’t underestimate your ability to save a life. Simply putting someone in the recovery position or administering an asthma inhaler could actually fix the incident before emergency services arrive. Your workplace first aid kit, with the appropriate medical supplies, is your wingman.
I have attended two choking incidents as a bystander (both children) and I knew what to do. If I (or someone else who knows first aid) had not been there, I do wonder what the outcome would have been.
