How long is a first aid course?

There are many different answers to this question, so we set out in the article to clarify how the accredited first aid courses are facilitated and how long each one takes, whether you attend face to face or complete some of the course online.

There are three main courses that are facilitated nationwide. There are many more available but these are the main ones.

The three courses are:

The Provide First Aid HLTAID011 also includes Provide basic emergency life support HLTAID010 and Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation HLTAID009

Provide first aid HLTAID003 has now been superceded by Provide first aid HLTAID011.

The Provide First Aid in an Education & Care Setting HLTAID012 includes Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation HLTAID009, Provide Basic Emergency Life Support HLTAID010 and Provide First Aid HLTAID011.

Commonly there are now options to complete some of the first aid courses online and attend a portion of the class as a face to face assessment.

The HLTAID011 assessment answers a lot of questions about the first steps in first aid and what you need to consider in an emergency.

CPR Training

Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation HLTAID009

This certificate can be facilitated in four different ways to enhance your skills and knowledge regardless of how you learn best.

  • 100% face to face
    • This takes 2 hours as a full face to face course. All of the admin, question papers and practical CPR and defibrillation assessments are in person at a pre-arranged venue.
  • The blended version
    • This takes 90 minutes and is where a small portion of the class is pre-online learning (around 30 minutes) and the remainder is a face to face assessment
  • Enhanced version
    • This version takes just 30 minutes for the face to face assessment but around 1-1.5 hours of online pre-learning..
  • 100% online course
    • The entire course is run online. 1-1.5 hrs of the learning is pre-online self-paced learning, and there will then be a 20 min live online zoom call where our trainer will assess you for completing 2 mins of CPR via zoom. This method can be a little more complicated to facilitate as the manikin (and any other resources needed) have to be delivered to the learner and picked up or sent back again.
