Top 7 First Aid FAQ’s

  1. How often do I need to do my first aid course?

You can do a first aid course whenever you like and there are plenty of different options available. However officially the two main courses must be renewed every 3 years. These two main courses are Provide First Aid HLTAID011 and Provide First Aid in an Education & Care Setting HLTAID012.

It is recommended that the CPR component of this course is refreshed every 12 months.

  1. Can I complete my first aid course online?

With the events from the last two years, we as a whole, have had to embrace the online world more and more. As a result of this we now have the option of running classes 80% online, leaving only a short portion of the course to be done face to face.

The online portion is self-paced, so you can pick it up and have breaks whenever you choose. The online portion of the course does need to be finished before the face to face assessment, but you will be guided as to how much time is needed to complete the online pre-assessment.

  1. Will you come to my workplace?

Yes! We specialise in workplace first aid courses. First aid is our thing and always at the top of our agenda. So when it comes to helping companies, and the life blood of your company (the employees) with simple, digestible and interesting learning in a convenient venue, we are there to deliver.

We find this makes life so much easier. The employees don’t have to think about new venues, transport, swapping childcare and all the other inconvenient parts of changing your routine. You will just come to work the same as any other day, and we will be there all set, ready and waiting to complete a simple short face to face assessment for CPR and other first aid competencies.

4. How long do first aid courses take?

This depends on which course you are doing and which delivery mode you have chosen.

Provide First Aid HLTAID011 is the most common course, and the most popular delivery mode is the enhanced course which is 80% online. As we discussed previously, this is self-paced and only then leaves 20% of the class to be done face to face. This equates to around 1-2 hours depending on how many people are in the class.

There is also a ‘blended’ course. This is 20% online and 80% face to face which could take around 5-6 hours.

Finally, you can choose to complete 100% of the course face to face, but it is important to note that you still need to complete some pre course admin online so that we can deliver the certificate and meet all the rules and requirements. This could take around 6-7 hours as it involves completing multiple choice question papers and assessments of injured people as well as the CPR, choking and asthma first aid assessments

Provide First Aid in an Education and Care setting is very similar, with just a few additions that are relevant to child care. As a result, you can add on anything from 20-60 minutes extra for the entire class.

The Provide CPR HLTAID009 is a much shorter course and should be refreshed every 12 months. The face to face course may just take 2-3 hours but if you choose the Enhanced version and do 80% online, your face to face assessment can be as short as 20 minutes!

5. How many first aiders does my workplace need?

Every workplace has a legal responsibility to ensure adequate first aid kits and a certain number of people who have nationally recognised training in first aid and CPR, and that this training is up to date.

There are three different workplace risk levels that are recognised by SafeWork NSW. These are Low risk, high risk and remote high risk. Access to emergency services as a remote worker is much more difficult, so this is why the ratio of first aiders is more condensed. They would also likely need to do a specific Remote First Aid course.

Ratio’s for Emergency Situations

Low Risk: Retail shops, art galleries, libraries, offices

High Risk: Factories, motor vehicle workshops or forestry operations

Remote High Risk: All night stores and service stations. Long distance freight support workers.

The ratios of first aiders in these workplaces are,

Low Risk: 1:50

High Risk: 1:25

Remote High Risk: 1:10

6. Will I get reminders when my first aid certificate needs refreshing?

Yes absolutely. We have a sophisticated Client Management System and as one of our clients you will be treated like family. We don’t want you to have to rush and panic, so we will remind you in plenty of time and take the fuss and hassle out of your next course. If you book with us once, you will already be in our system, so it is a simple as logging in and starting your new course on the same day.

7. When will I receive my first aid certificate?

Your certificate can be delivered to you the next day. Once you have completed your face to face assessment and all of your online pre-course work, we notify the national accreditation team and you will receive your certificate quickly. We keep your certificates on file too so if you lose your certificate or need another copy for any reason, we can also oblige with that.
